Mechanical Woes Create Long Night At Brighton

The Southern Ontario Sprints returned to Brighton Speedway for round two of the tours 15th Anniversary Season. Driving in his 50th year of competition Dick Mahoney brought the #79 sprint car to the track in looks of improving on his 6th place finish in the opener on May 22nd.
Early in the evening it was apparent though that it would be a hard fought night at the track. Mechanical problems kept the #79 team from competing in the 8 lap qualifying heat race. Dick would be forced to start tail in the feature.
When feature time rolled around Mahoney would line up 14th in the 17 car field. Mid-way through the race the #79 was as high as 7th but as the track began to dry off and become slick the cars setup proved to be slightly off for the conditions. Dick would finish the race in 11th position.
Jamie Collard of Burford won the 20 lap main event with a last lap pass of Glenn Styres. Keith Dempster, Rick Wilson and Warren Mahoney rounded out the top five.
After two events Dick finds himself 9th in the overall standings heading into the tours next stop. The #79 Mahoney Racing Team will return to action on Friday, July 2nd at 7:45pm at Ohsweken Speedway as the Southern Ontario Sprints continue their 15th Anniversary Season at the Ohsweken Speedway as part of the Northern Summer Nationals.
