As
the Southern Ontario Sprints kicked off their 15th
Anniversary Season, "The Pig" Dick Mahoney
pushed off his 50th year of racing. The driver of
Newmarket, Ontario started the milestone season in
fine fashion posting a solid top 10 at Brighton
Speedway.
The event began with Dick starting 5th in
the first of two 8 lap heats. The decks were stacked
as former series champions Glenn Styres, Keith
Dempster and Adam West along with the always tough
Rick Wilson were all in the first qualifier. Dick held
his ground and finished where he started in 5th.
Because of threatening skies the SOS
decided against the Dash for Cash so it was straight
to the re-draw for the 20 lap main event. Dick drew
the 9th starting spot in the 16 car field.
The feature was slowed by numerous yellow
flags but when the action finally picked up it was
fast and furious. Dick managed to work his way up the
6th spot at the end of the 20 lap affair. He as able
to do this despite losing the right front torsion bar
early in the race. Keith Dempster went on to win the
season opener in a close finish over Tyler Rand.
After one event Dick finds himself 6th in
the overall standings heading into the tours next
stop. The #79 Mahoney Racing Team will return to
action on Saturday, June 19th at 7pm at Brighton
Speedway as the Southern Ontario Sprints continue
their 15th Anniversary Season at the Brighton
Speedway.
