Mahoney Racing opens season with a rough start

It took three attempts but the 2009 Southern Ontario Sprints season finally saw the green flag. After rain washed away May 9th and May 16th dates Brighton Speedway rescheduled to Sunday May 17th.

For Dick Mahoney and the crew the season didn't start out as well as they had hoped. After starting on pole in the first qualifying heat the #79 finished the 8 lap affair in 6th. From there it was an 11th place start in the main event. With rain the day before leaving the infield soaked, the large implement tires around the inside line were moved out further than usual, catching April Wilson off guard. Wilson clipped one of the tires while racing through the corner, sending a tire out into the path of Dick Mahoney. The Mahoney machine hit the tire squarely, knocking the front suspension out of the car and ending Dick’s night.

Dick and the #79 team will try to rebound from their rocky start as the Southern Ontario Sprints head to South Buxton Raceway on Saturday May 23rd for Round #2. Race time in Merlin, Ontario is 7pm.
