DRIVERS GO 'WINGY' AT NATIONALS

The Canadian Sprint Car Nationals bring out the best of the best and the 2006 edition was no different. Dick Mahney and the #79 team were on hand for the annual classic and once again had the legendary Jack Hewitt as a pit crew member.

The two night show was filled with the top names in 360 sprint car racing and that made making the show difficult.  On Friday night it was go or go home right off the bat. With no non-qualifier races a driver had to finish in the top five in their heat or they were done for the night. Dick managed to bring the #79 to a 9th place finish but that meant had to watch the rest of the event from the grandstands.

On Saturday night a two lap time trial session would set the heats and consi lineups.  Dick qualified 65th fastest of 76 cars with a lap of 15.517. That put him into one of two non-qualifiers race where he would finish 9th and be finished for the remainder of the evening.

The weekend was a fun one for all the teams. After some wild crashes and close racing thankfully everyone walked away and had a good experience. One of the drivers who had a major crash was the #42w of Rick Wilson (above). As his car was coming to a halt with engine failure on the backstretch he was hit hard by the A-Main race leader Justin Barger at close to 120mph. Rick was uninjured though and can be seen riding his wing as it was being towed through the pits later on that night. More photos in the Photo Section.
