Saturday
night at South Buxton was a night
of horror for many of the SOS
teams with a total of five roll
overs throughout the event. For
Dick Mahoney though the script on
this evening was one for the
movies as it truly had a fairy
tale ending.
Dick
was all smiles before the race as
fellow racer and good friend, the
legendary, Jack Hewitt was on hand
to act as an honourary crew member
on the #79. Whether it was with
Jack's help or just sweet irony
the 'Purple Pig' was flying at the
drop of the first green flag. Dick
cruised to an easy 8 lap
qualifying heat win. Things didn't
change come feature time as
Mahoney was untouchable throughout
the night. He led every lap of the
20 lap A-Main and was greeted in
victory lane by Mr. Hewitt. Dick's
victory was a big relief for the
Newmarket, Ontario native. He
admitted to having lost some
confidence in himself but it was
obvious that having his good
friend there on this night help
him to rejuvenate and find the
confidence and power to taste
victory. The
win helped propel the #79 team to
8th in the overall SOS points.
After a rained out weekend at
Brighton the
teams head to the Ohsweken
Speedway for the SOS Championship
Invitational on Friday September
8th at 7:45pm. |
