GREAT START ENDS WITH MECHANICAL PROBLEMS

The 2006 season for the Southern Ontario Sprints kicked off at the Brighton Speedway on Saturday May 6th. Dick Mahoney and the #79 team were back at the track to help get the 11th season for the SOS underway.

After a tough offseason physically Dick came out with all cylinders firing as he cruised to dominating win the second SOS heat race. He held off defending series champion Adam West and a late charge by Ken Swan for the win. The night though would slowly get worse from that point on. On the cool down lap the rear brake locked up and would keep the #79 from competing in the Dash for Cash. The crew with help from others in the pit area worked feverishly on the car and had Dick ready to run just in time for the 20 lap feature.

Starting on the outside of the front row Dick would stay in the front pack for the majority of the opening laps. However the earlier brake problem was still evident as the rotor was cherry red throughout most of the feature. Finally the night would come to an abrupt halt as the #79 lost its left front wheel coming out of corner four and came to rest at the start finish line. The bad fortune would relegate Mahoney to an 18th place finish in the first SOS feature of the season.

Dick Mahoney and the #79 team will get back into action on Friday May 19th at the Ohsweken Speedway followed by a trip to the Humberstone Speedway on Sunday May 21st.
