Dick
Mahoney joined the Southern Ontario
Sprints in 1998 and captured the Rookie
of the Year title. "The Pig"
came to the SOS with an impressive
resume that included many seasons on the
ultra-competitive Can Am Midget
circuit.Mahoney came close to victory on
several occasions early in his sprint
car racing career. His first close call
came at South Buxton Raceway in his
rookie year when he led the first 19
laps but was passed by Mike Ling on the
final corner of the final lap. Later on
that same season Dick had comfortable
control of a feature at Brighton when
mechanical gremlins sidelined him.
Despite
all his close calls Dick would not find
victory lane until 2001 at Ransomville
Speedway. The Ransomville race was the
2001 season finale and Dick’s son
Warren found himself embroiled in a
tight points battle with arch rival
Keith Dempster. Warren was sidelined
early in the feature and Keith was
moving forward rapidly trying to take
the title. The final laps were a
shoot-out between Dick and Dempster but
in the end Mahoney held on to take his
first SOS feature win while Warren
claimed his first title.
Although
he claims to be 38 years of age Dick has
been forced to admit that may be a
little fib as he has competed 3 times in
the Goodyear Masters Classic at
Knoxville Raceway. The Masters Classic
is a race for the best racers who are
50+ years of age. Dick’s first visit
was less than friendly as he blew his
motor in hot laps but in his next try he
made the show comfortably and came home
with a solid top 10 finish in the
feature. 2003 was Dick’s most
recent attempt at the race and was
arguably his most impressive. Mahoney
was running second in his heat when he
ran out of fuel. In the feature Dick
charged through the field but could only
muster a 14th place finish after passing
a pile of cars.
Although
he is quite a racer himself Dick has
proven to be a pretty good car owner as
well. He owns his own car, supports his
son and also has a third car
affectionately known as
"Lefty" because it is mostly
been made up of leftover parts. CASCAR
star Neil Fair spent the final few races
of 2003 behind the wheel of Lefty.
Fair is not the only well known driver
to get behind the wheel of a Mahoney
race car. Legendary racer Jack Hewitt
was known to strap himself into Dick’s
TQ Midget in the Niagara Falls indoor
series and was able to bring home some
impressive finishes.
In
2005 Dick, the SOS Vice President and
schedule handler, mad an assault on the
Southern Ontario Sprints title and
finished in the third position overall.
His Maxim kit from 2003 URC champion and
former Pennsylvannia 410 star Dave Ely
never reached victory lane but ran up
front all season long. After a
post season eye operation Dick was given
full clearance by doctors to return to
the cockpit of the #79 for the 2006
season. |
