The Southern Ontario Sprints spent Labour Day Weekend
at the Brighton Speedway for an event that has truly
grown into its name. The Labour Day Classic Weekend
saw a three team battle play out for the SOS
championship.
For Dick Mahoney and the #79 team there
was no title to be had but a chance to finish the
season on a strong note. On Saturday evening Mahoney
would finish both races in the same position he
started with a 4th in his 8 lap heat and 11th in the
20 lap main event. Teammate Jim Munsie meanwhile was
7th in his heat and picked up 5 spots in the feature
coming home 14th.
Sunday night the title was on the line
for Justin Martin, Adam West and Dick's son Warren
Mahoney. The title contenders kept each other in sight
all night. For Dick the night was a reflection of his
season as he was once again bitten by bad racing luck.
After drawing the outside pole for the 20 lap
championship deciding race Mahoney ran up front for
much of the early stages of the race. However on lap 7
teammate Jim Munsie and rookie Kyle Fraser came
together in corner four. Dick spun to avoid the wreck
and was unable to keep the car going. The #79 had to
restart at the tail of the field on what was their
best outing of 2009. Dick managed to work his way back
to 12th in the finishing order and end the season 7th
in the overall SOS standings. Son Warren flipped late
in the race and destroyed his car and title hopes.
Justin Martin captured the 2009 SOS title over Adam
West and Warren.
Dick and the #79 team would like to thank
their friends, family, fans and most of all their
sponsors for their outstanding support during the 2009
Southern Ontario Sprints season!
